April 5, 2013 Featured Artist, Robert Gilbert’s New York Collection

Gilbert's art is excitement, emotion, and energy. "New York buildings at night are my favorite subject. I have a passion to paint the strong, vibrant, colorful life at the ground level while the buildings overhead push down upon us. My skin tingles as I think of new subjects to paint."

New Featured Artist, Karen Bateman

Plein Air Painter

Karen Bateman's paintings reflect her love of the outdoors, especially the quit places near her home in northern Virginia. She typically paints outdoors, directly from nature in the "alla prima" style; completing her oil paintings in one sitting, which allows her to capture the immediate feeling of a place.

After enrolling in an outdoor painting course in 2007, Karen is largely self-taught. She was courted by a New York gallery where eight of her paintings were displayed in a group show for a full season. Her first one-woman show was at a Virginia winery in 2008, and she has been juried into a number of local competitions.

A dedicated painter, Karen makes time to paint weekly, typically at dawn. The provides not only lovely morning light, but more importantly it leaves time for her young son Jack, her husband Ty and a full time career at the National Insitutes of Health. The banks of the Potomac, the Virginia wine country and the foothills of the Blue Ridge are among her favorite places to paint, as well as anywhere along the sea coast. Painting the landscapes of New England always brings back fond memories of growing up along the Massachusetts shore.

"Inspiration. It is my hope that these images will reveal to you a moment in time that conveys a sense of the enduring beauty of the Shenandoah." Diane Artz Furlong is well acquainted with the landscape of the northern Shenandoah Valley.

Where Art and Dentistry Meet

Grand opening, showcasing art by Anatol Woolf

March 3 – September 3, 2011

Opening reception: Thursday, March 3, 6-8 PM

Press preview with the owner and the artist: 5 PM

Inside Art and Dentistry, LLCDr. Ellen Brodsky is pleased to announce the opening of her new office, Art & Dentistry, where the beauty of art and the art of dentistry unite. Dr. Brodsky, a passionate lover of art, has worked hard with her staff to create an office that looks and feels more like an art gallery. The atmosphere is enhanced by local architect Glenn Forest's striking interior design.

Dr. Brodsky plans to create an exciting environment that showcases the work of local artists several times a year. By displaying different collections every few months, she hopes that patients and visitors will always look forward to seeing new paintings and artwork.

Art & Dentistry's inaugural exhibit will feature a collection of oil and acrylic works by Anatol Woolf. In this series, Woolf playfully depicts the characters of the Italian Comedy of Art — La Commedia Dell'Arte — in distinct settings throughout the world.

Woolf brings his characters to life by drawing on his own rich background in theater design. In Russia, the artist studied at the renowned St. Petersburg Institute of Theater, Music, and Cinematography. Later, he designed sets for Russia's leading theaters.

Now, Woolf uses his canvas to embrace the Shakespearean mantra, "All the world's a stage," envisioning a set for his Commedia actors that indeed spans the globe.

Art by Anatol WoolfAs a painter, Woolf is known for injecting a humorous flair into the technical rigor of his classical training to provide a colorful commentary on contemporary society. Through generous use of texture and other stylistic surprises, as well as unexpected bursts of subject matter, Woolf intrigues the viewer into following him into the world he has created.

A similar spark characterizes his illustrations, which have appeared both in books and in many national publications, from the Washington Post, to Cricket and Spider magazines, to National Geographic Traveler. Woolf has exhibited his art widely, and his works can be found in a number of private collections in the United States and Europe.
