Orthodontics Q & A

What does getting orthodontics mean?

Orthodontic treatments align your teeth and jaws into a straighter, more comfortable position. With modern technology, Art and Dentistry offers many orthodontic treatment options, including braces and Invisalign. The team performs a comprehensive orthodontic exam that includes digital X-rays to determine the right type for you.

Braces

Braces include metal brackets and bond to the surface of your teeth. A wire runs through the brackets to slowly shift your teeth into alignment. Because braces are fixed, they’re highly visible and difficult to clean.

Invisalign

Invisalign is a series of removable clear aligners custom-made to fit the exact shape and size of your teeth. They allow you to complete orthodontic treatment discreetly and eat and clean your teeth without the barriers of braces.

What can orthodontics do?

Orthodontics can address a wide range of concerns that affect the alignment of your teeth and bite, including:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Overcrowding
  • Gapped teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Asymmetrical jaw growth
  • Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ)

The team can recommend the appropriate treatment for you depending on the type and severity of your condition.

Are orthodontics painful?

Orthodontic treatment usually isn’t painful, but it can be uncomfortable initially. You may experience soreness for a few days after getting braces or an adjustment, but this discomfort is temporary. Over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers can help minimize swelling and improve comfort.

Most people find Invisalign more comfortable than traditional braces, as the aligners are smooth and don’t irritate your gums and lips like metal brackets might.

How long will I need to wear orthodontics?

Every case is different, but most people need orthodontics for at least six months. Traditional braces take about 18 months to three years to correct orthodontic issues, while Invisalign may produce similar results in six to 18 months. How long you need to wear orthodontics depends on the severity of your concerns and the type of treatment you choose.

The Art and Dentistry team believes every patient deserves a healthy, beautiful smile, and orthodontics can help you achieve just that. Call the office today to schedule an appointment to learn more.
